Valentine’s Day Alone for Single Young Women

Some people do not like being alone on St. Valentine’s Day. Younger women in particular feel that being alone on St. Valentine’s Day bears a stigma, which makes them feel depressed and abandoned. But just because someone is not in a relationship, it does not mean they cannot have a good time. I will give a couple of suggestions below to help you have a time to remember.

1] Call up all your single girlfriends and go clubbing. Many young men like to dance every now and again or to their favourite songs, but they do not want to dance non-stop. On the other hand, young women often do like to dance non-stop, so you may have a better time without a boyfriend in a nightclub.

2] Another good idea for single girls on Valentine’s Day is to give a movie night at your home. You could invite over all of your single friends and hire a few comedies. Instead of being gloomy and miserable, you and your friends can watch the movies and take the rise out of the characters in the film.

Hire a few horror movies too for an extra special night. Lots of young people like horror films. They like to have a scream and hide their faces behind their friends’ backs. Treat the evening like a proper night at the movies and get popcorn, snacks, ice cream and cola, etc in.

3] You could hold a singles party. Invite all of your single friends and tell them they have to bring a friend of the opposite sex. Buy or borrow some of those games that make you answer personal questions like ‘Forfeits’ and ‘Twister’, where you have to put your hands and feet on different coloured spots on a plastic mat.

‘Mr and Mrs’ is another game where you ask one half of a ‘couple’ questions about the other in his absence. He has to corroborate the replies when he is called back into the room. The answers could be hilarious, because the contestants will not know each other well.

3] Hire a table in a non-romantic restaurant and get eight or more girlfriends to go out for a meal. Once the atmosphere begins building, things can become great fun and you could go dancing later.

4] You could organize a visit to the theatre and have a meal afterwards. Most people do not go to the theatre every year, so going with your friends on St. Valentine’s Day would make the day truly unforgettable.

5] You could make up a basket of your favourite things. Include some really special things like gourmet chocolate or other gourmet candy. Get something lavish to drink that is appropriate to your age. Then you can pig out on your favourite foods and drink and watch a few films on your own or with your sister or other family member like a favourite cousin.

There are many things you can do to enjoy Valentine’s Day as a single girl, there’s no need to mope around feeling sorry for yourself at all.

For decades, dinner time in the USA meant one thing. Sitting around a kitchen table with your family (and perhaps a few friends), and enjoying a tasty meal together. Eating off a nice table, dinner set complete with a plate, fork, knife, spoon, glass(s), napkins, and a centerpiece, was a nightly ritual. Although it is a far rarer event these days, it’s still a great way to enjoy some great conversation, and a nice way to welcome in the evening hours.

In this article we will be exploring the world of a major aspect of these family dinners, the dinner set. We will be providing a bit of history, and time permitting, go into some of the finer sets available, and where you might be able to obtain them.

The civilizations of the ancient world were characterized by the pottery that remained long after the civilization had passed. When archaeologists were digging around their various archaeological sites they would come across these items, and it’s interesting to note that people often valued these items so much that they were buried with them.

Dinnerware is often referred to as “China”. Strange name don’t you think? Ever wonder where it came from? There is a logical answer. Years ago dinnerware was made out of porcelain, and porcelain was invented by, you guessed it, the Chinese, over 1000 years ago. It was probably invented by the Tang Dynasty, but for some reason the emperors of the Song Dynasty seem to get the most credit for it. Around 1100 AD (about 1/2 way through the Song Dynasty), the art and skill of porcelain making was being circulated throughout the East. By the time 1400 AD had rolled around, this art form had migrated all the way to Europe.

Years ago, importing fine dinnerware from China was a very expensive proposition. Due to this expense, only the very wealthy could afford to own it. The remedy this situation, the Europeans started to create their own “China Factories”. They modified the process a bit by incorporating some different clays and other materials. This resulted in a softer China, one that was to have a duller tone than those similar products that were being imported from China. Around 1700 we see another form of China starting to emerge onto the scene. It was called “Bone China”, a name resulting from the fact it was a mixture of both porcelain clays and “bone ash”.

Today, most of our valuable and yes collectable dinnerware is made from pottery, not porcelain. It’s sometimes called “earthenware”, and it was extremely popular during the decades of the 1950’s and 1960’s.

What’s the most widely used pottery today? Stoneware is the answer. If you look around it seems to be everywhere. Check out the stores, the restaurants, the hotels and various homes. It’s all around us. Stoneware is made by firing the item at a very high temperature until it’s completely solid, and can therefore hold liquids. The process to create Stoneware was developed in the same place as the process for creating porcelain…China, about 3500 years ago. Some of the most collectable pieces of Stoneware in today’s world were created in the mid 1800’s in the Virginia and New England areas of the United States.

We have received so many wonderful responses on the articles regarding heart jewelry that we have written in the past. We thank you so much. Today we would like to write a more generic article regarding the history of jewelry in general. “Jewelry Making” as an art form has been around for thousands of years, and we see that different cultures have incorporated it in various ways. When we examine these pieces of jewelry we gain insight into how these various cultures worked…

In Ancient Africa the homo sapiens provide us with the first signs of a culture using jewelry. Snail shell beads have been found at the Blombos Cave in South Africa that date back to over 75,000 years ago. At Enkapune Ya Moto in Kenya beads made from ostrich egg shells have been found that date back to over 40,000 years ago.

When we think of Egypt we think of the pyramids and the sphinx, right? What about jewelry? Well, it is here that we find the first signs of established jewelry making around 3,000 – 5,000 years ago. Egyptians made their jewelry out of the same materials that we make jewelry out of today. For example, gemstones, but they preferred to make their jewelry out of glass, which they could color to satisfy their particular tastes. This meant that for every gemstone that they could find in nature, they were able to manufacture a glass replication that could mimic it. Other cultures have used the template of Egyptian jewelry in their own jewelry making. Consider the Phoenicians for example, who copied many Egyptian designs.

To the Ancient Egyptians color was very important, not only for the beauty, but because it meant different things. The Egyptian Book of the Dead provides us with more details. For example, the necklace of Isis that was to be place on the neck of a mummy needed to be red in color. They believed that this red color would satisfy Isis’s need for blood. Green jewelry, on the other hand, was used to symbolize growth in the area of crops and fertility. The Egyptians made their jewelry in large workshops that were often attached to palaces and temples.

Around 4000 years ago we see jewelry development and production starting to spring up in the cities of Sumer and Akkad in Ancient Mesopotamia. This jewelry tended to be made from metal leaf, and was often set in a large number of brightly-colored stones, such as lapis, jasper, agate, and carnelian. They also incorporated various shapes, such as grapes, leafs, cones and spirals into their designs. Since the Ancient Mesopotamians were also masters in the area of record keeping, huge archives of detailed records relating to the creation and trading of jewelry have been unearthed in various archaeological sites.

We hope this little departure from our usual heart jewelry articles has been fun and educational. It’s amazing to see how jewelry making as evolved over the years.

Today’s world provides us with so many choices and options. We can contact people by traditional phone, cell phone, email, or regular mail. We can drive a car, take a bus, ride a bike, or stroll along. Given the options available to us today, it’s only natural that variety should work its way into one of our most cherished traditions…the wedding cake. Selecting the flavor of the cake and the color of the icing is just the starter. Don’t forget to take some time to choose the best wedding cake topper for your special cake. In this article we will be exploring the world of the wedding cake, providing some background details on the tradition, and working our way up to the selection process of the perfect topper for that very special cake.

The wedding cake is usually displayed proudly and strategically during the wedding reception. Towering into the heavens, it competes with the bride as the “center of attention” on the big day. This work of art establishes a focal point that the other aspects of the reception revolve around. For those couples that prefer a bit of the dramatic, the wedding cake can be wheeled in at the end of the reception for a “grand entrance” for all to see. The Beginning

The wedding cake has certainly evolved over the years. It started off as a simple symbol of fertility, but has transformed itself into an artistic tradition that can have many different interpretations. For many ancient peoples wheat was a symbol of both fertility and a bountiful harvest. The Ancient Romans used to throw grains of wheat at the bride and groom in a “wish of fertility” to the new couple during their union. This custom evolved into bringing little cakes made from wheat to the wedding banquet. They would then crumble this cake over the head of the bride to wish them “many children”, and the guests would then eat the crumbs as a symbol of sharing in the couple’s good fortune.

Many think that this “crumbling of the cake” over the bride’s head may have evolved into another wedding day tradition? Do you know what it is? In order to protect the hapless bride from the wheat shower that is to come, bridesmaids draped a cloth over her head before the “crumbling tradition” took place. Many believe that this simple cloth evolved into the wedding veil of today.

The Middle Ages

By the time the Middle Ages entered the scene, buns or sweet rolls had replaced the wheat cakes, but it was still very customary for wedding guests to bring these tasty treats to the wedding. They were placed in a huge pile between the bride and groom, and if the happy couple was able to kiss over this stack of wheat, it was believed that they would be blessed with many children during their marriage.

Many believe that the next step in the evolution of the traditional cake was performed in the 17th century by a French pastry chef. While on a trip to London he happened to observe this “cake piling” ceremony. Upon his subsequent return to France he coated the stack of buns with sugar, and thereby “cemented” them together into one very tasty art form. This was to become the first rendition of the tiered and frosted wedding cake, and a mere forerunner as to what was to come in the years ahead.

A Touch Of Class

You are probably familiar with the classic style of the modern day wedding cake. It’s the one with the distinctive design of smaller tiers as the cake builds vertically? Here’s a bit of trivia for you. It is believed that this model was inspired by the spire of the 14th century Saint Bride’s church in London.

Many of today’s valued wedding traditions came from Victorian England. Queen Victoria herself is said to have had a cake that weighed in at 300 lbs. As bakers and confectioners became more skillful and daring, their creations became even more elaborate and daring. When England’s Princess Elizabeth and Prince Phillip were married in 1947, their wedding cake weighed in at a whopping 500 lbs, and was 9 feet tall.

The Version of Today

In today’s world the elaborate wedding cake is no longer reserved for the rich and famous. Every couple can share in the tradition of having a wedding cake added to their big day. The wedding cake specialists of today’s world have taken their art to towering heights (pardon the pun). Long gone are those bland days when you were limited to a white cake with white frosting. Although a white cake will probably always be the most popular due to its traditional meaning, today’s couple is limited only by the limits of their imagination (and budget) when it comes to their wedding cake.

And The Color White Comes From?

Why is white is the customary color of a wedding cake? Do you know? As the story goes, back in Victorian times the finer ingredients of a wedding cake were expensive and scarce and very hard to come by. If the cake had a white icing on the other hand, this revealed the fact that only the best (and most expensive) white sugar was being used in the baking process. Brown sugar was much more common at the time, and therefore much less expensive. So, logically speaking, the more white the cake, the richer the people who created the cake were.

Be Prepared…Plan Ahead

One of the most important things that you can remember is to not leave your special cake till the last minute. Whether you choose the local baker, a talented family member, or a pastry chef who specializes in these tasty masterpieces, if you plan well in advance you will be able to navigate the hard waters of whatever obstacles might come your way. Some bakers require only a minimum notice, while many are booked far in advance. It’s a shame to have that perfect cake of your imagination be “cancelled” due to the fact you cannot allocate a baker’s time.

What if you have no idea who will be baking your wedding cake? If you don’t have a particular baker in mind, you have a bit of homework to do. Shop around and get some recommendations from family and friends. Investigate the yellow pages and the internet as they are both valuable informational resources. If you happen to be surfing the web you will find that many bakers today are posting photos of some of their masterpieces. As a sort of masterpiece gallery, they showcase what they are capable of producing, and this will jog your imagination as to what you would like your own wedding cake to look like.

Don’t Forget Your Budget

Be sure to be mindful of your budget before you let your imagination get the best of you. You want your wedding day to be one of celebration, not the day that you started your journey into debt. Many people are surprised at the cost of a wedding cake these days. Keep in mind that you are asking an artisan to create a colorful masterpiece for you, and this can often be reflected in the price that he/she will be asking. The cost of labor is often the largest expense in the creation of a wedding cake, but also keep in mind the simple fact that fondant is more expensive than buttercream.

Lets face it breaking up sucks. If you have ever heard the song “Need You Now” by Lady Antebellum (if you haven’t make a point of checking it out, it’s a great song) you may have sympathized with the characters in the song who are going through a break up and doing things all wrong.

Here’s a line from the song: “It’s a quarter after one, I’m all alone and I need you now. Said I wouldn’t call but I lost all control and I need you now.” Rule number one, Stop The Desperate Dialing!

Another line from the song is: “It’s a quarter after one, I’m a little drunk and I need you now.” Mistake number 2, drunk dialing. Another mistake we make in vulnerable break up state is to text the ex. And text, and text, and text. Don’t! Texting terrorism has never worked and never will.

I’m guessing you have probably heard the saying, “Talking is sharing. Listening is caring.” I hear that every now and then, and recently I saw it posted on a sign somewhere. Unlike many other well-known sayings, this one really is on target.

In one of the devotionals that I sent out to my subscriber list I wrote about a rough time in my life that I was going through and how God’s Word had been a great comfort to me. When I wrote that devotional I had no idea that I would get such a warm response from readers. I had calls from friends and emails from readers that I don’t even know personally. Many of them told me that they were there for me if I wanted to talk to someone.

Just knowing that they took the time to email or call, and that they cared how I was doing, really meant a lot to me. By doing that I knew that my friends and readers had truly listened to the message of my devotional, and they cared enough to show it.

The world we live in is always hectic and busy, and it’s easy for us to have trouble listening to others. We tend to get distracted by what is going on and by the concerns in our own lives and we don’t stop to think about how we can help others just by listening. Most of us our guilty of this, but it is something that we can work on.

When you listen to someone else it shows that you care and that you value them. You show that you care enough to give them your time and attention, and that can mean a lot. Listening helps to build stronger, deeper relationships, and it brings two people closer together. By listening to others we can show them God’s love.

Throughout Jesus’s life, the Bible records stories that involve Him listening to others. He was a great listener that cared about others enough to give them His attention, even though there were plenty of other things calling out for His attention. In one case Jesus spoke with a Jewish leader named Nicodems, who asked Jesus some questions about His teachings.

John 4 records that just a short time later, Jesus sat in a foreign country and listened to a sinful woman who came to draw water at the well where He rested. Religion, gender, social position, and moral character didn’t matter to Jesus. He listened and He cared. He is the role model we are to follow.

To all of you how reached out to me, thank you. The fact that you were willing to listen really meant a lot to me. I want to let you know that the situation has been resolved.

God, I thank You for the wonderful friends that you have placed in my life. I ask that you would help me to be a good listener and to show the love that these friends have shown to me during my difficult times.

Food and Such…

We have all probably heard that the best way to a man’s heart is through his stomach. For many men this is true. 1) Let’s consider breakfast for starters. How about making him something unique…like “heart-shaped” pancakes perhaps? Not into pancakes? 3) The evening dinner is the last meal of the day for most people. The last meal of the day, but by no means the least romantic. How about having a candlelight dinner with some special scented candles? You could play some romantic soothing music in the background. Be sure that the meal is very special…perhaps his favorite?

4) Snacks are often eaten throughout the day, but a romantic snack is a very memorable invent. I wonder, did you have that special treat that you ate together when you first started dating? An ice cream cone and a walk along the lake perhaps? Nobody says that you can’t recreate this experience again by “retracing your steps”. Bring on the romantic snack!

Signs of Affection

We all need to know that people care about us, and men are included in this group. Sure, they may be the “strong, silent type”, but they can still get a teary eye when they watch a sad or romantic movie. To show that special guy that you love him, here are a few ways:

1) You know, a hug says so much. When he least expects it, why not come up from behind and put your arms around him and give him a nice hug. You can whisper “I love you” in his ear. Don’t overdo this mind you…just once in a while so that it will be something really unique and special.

2) Listen to that guy in your life. One of the most basic needs of all human beings is the need to be heard. When he comes home after a tough day at the office he might want to rave and complain a bit. Just sit back an listen to what he has to say, and instead of changing the subject, offer “I’m here” responses such as “Hmmm”, “I see”, or “Oh my”.

3) Don’t forget, some guys don’t like to talk at all when they get home from work. The frustrations of their day are too near and too raw. They just want to sit back and “veg” for a while. Give them all the time that they need. They will probably start to talk your ear off once they unwind a bit, but give them that time to unwind.

4) Some guys out there like a good massage, and if you are gifted in this way, this a great way to show that you care about him. The human touch is a very powerful thing. Remember to be gentle though…there is no need to bring him to tears. You can give him a back rub, or how about just running your fingers lightly through his hair? This is a great for you to both prepare for the evening meal, or other things…

Romantic Activities

Many guys are very adventurous. They love to explore and try out new things. They love to test their manliness. Here are a few things that you can do together…

1) You can show your man that you love him is to do something that you would not normally do. For example, perhaps you really hate football. You have made no surprise of this to the guy in your life. Why not put your distain for the sport on hold for a day or two and join him on the couch watching his favorite team? Instead of rolling your eyes and saying “Why are they so brutal” … ask him what a “first down” means. Guys love to show that they are knowledgeable about something, and will love to explain in detail to you the finer points of the game. If he’s not into football, but baseball, or basketball, or hockey, well, I’m sure you can figure out what you should ask him if you watch the sport for a few minutes…

2) What about chores? Does that special guy in your life have chores that he needs to do on a regular basis? Here’s an idea. Why not do it for him for once. Tell him that since he looks tired you decided to help him out. Remember to tell him that you are helping him out for once. If not, you may find that you have bought yourself yet one more chore to do around the house.

3) Pillow fight anyone? Most of us have left pillow fights behind with our childhood…back when we used to jump up and down on the bed. Who says we need to leave all the fun behind when we grow up? Here’s a thought. One night, when you are getting ready for bed, hall off and “wallop” him! He’ll be taken by surprise, for sure…but he might get a kick out of it. Be prepared for him to hall off and “wallop” you back. Let the action begin!

Compliment Him

We all love to be complimented in various ways, on our clothes, or our accomplishments or our thoughtfulness. Here are a few great ways to compliment a guy:

1) Remember to say only nice things about your guy when you are out in public. Tell your friends how special he is, or how hard he works, or how much he cares for others. Word will eventually get back to that special guy of yours. He will be thrilled that all the things he is most proud of have not gone unnoticed by others.

2) Some guys are really into clothes, and they love to show off their “sense of style”. If that special guy in your life loves clothes, be sure that you notice all his efforts, and doubly make sure that you tell him that you notice. He will appreciate the fact that others, especially you, notice.

3) Is there something that your guy does for you that you really appreciate? Perhaps your guy does the dishes from time to time? Maybe he takes the baby out for a regular walk when you need time to unwind? Let him know how much you appreciate these little (and not so little) things that he does for you.

4) Leave little romantic notes in places that he will find them. Why not put a little note on the steering wheel of his car one evening so he will see it when he gets into it in the morning? It could say something like “You Are Loved”. He will get the hint.
